What is the Learning Resources Center?
The Learning Resources Center (LRC) houses the collection of audiovisual media items (slides, audiocassettes, CDs, videotapes, and DVDs) in the Health Sciences Library collection. The LRC also has public computers, a typewriter, a laminator (laminating pouches are available for sale), group study rooms, an open study area with several tables, and washrooms.

AV collection items can be circulated. They are due three days after being checked out and can be renewed. The borrowing period can be lengthened upon request when the item is checked out. AV items can also be used in the LRC.

Top

How can I find out what is in the LRC collection?

The LRC collection is kept in the LRC office which is not a public area. We are glad to let you browse the collection. Please ask to do so at the LRC service desk.

Top

Can I use one of the LRC computers to work on a presentation or class work?
Yes. The LRC computers are configured with a variety of software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), statistical software (SPSS and SYSTAT), and Endnote (for organizing bibliographies).
Top

Can I save work to the LRC computer and get access to it later?
The LRC computers (and all public computers in the Health Sciences Library) are configured to erase anything saved whenever the computer is started up or logged in. We are glad to provide assistance to someone who must save work for later use. We also encourage you to email your work to yourself. We also sell CD-Rs during daytime hours, Monday through Friday.
Top

Can I use my jump or flash drive to save work?
Yes. We encourage the use of USB drives for saving and archiving your work. Each public computer has a CD burner for saving work to a CD-R or CD-RW disk. Each computer also has a floppy disk drive, but we discourage the use of floppy disks as they are often too small to save large files and have presented other problems in the past.

Can I read files from the memory card or memory stick in my digital camera or video camera?
The LRC has a couple of all in one memory device readers. Please ask for assistance at the LRC service desk during daytime hours Monday through Friday.

What if I have to listen to something at one of the computers?
All the LRC computers are configured with speakers. Most of the computers have speakers in the monitor. We do not have headphones to lend, but you can use your headphones or earbuds. Two computers are available in a small room near the LRC office and can be used for listening to sound files without headphones.

Can I access EPIC on the LRC computers?
Yes. The library homepage has a link to Loyola Wired and to the EMR page, both of which provide access to EPIC. We advise anyone using EPIC within the library to comply with HIPAA regulations and take care not to leave protected information on the computer or one of the library’s printers. Any such information left out will be turned in to Corporate Compliance. The LRC has a shredder that can be used to shred any printed records with HIPAA protected information.

Can I use my own computer in the LRC?
The LRC is a wi-fi hotspot. You can use your own computer. The wi-fi network is configured to allow access without an access key or code. The name of the wireless network (SSID) in the Health Sciences Library is loyolapub.

Can I access a server on the LUMC network from one of the LRC computers?
The LRC computers are configured with a specialized login for use in the LRC. This login does not have access to servers on the LUMC network. But you can log out and login with your own network login. This should provide you with access to any servers you have access to. Medical students can access their U drives this way.

What if I need to scan a photograph or table from an article?
The LRC has two flatbed scanners that can be used to scan a photograph, part of an article or other printed document, xrays, or photographic slides. Each scanner is configured to be used on either of the two adjacent computers. If you need assistance with using a scanner, please ask at the LRC service desk.
