How to register for classes
An hour-long session, open to all Loyola faculty, residents, and staff; Attendees will have hands-on experience learning about the print and electronic resources available through the library homepage. Course objectives include understanding how to locate print and electronic materials in the library, from the office, and from home, as well as learning how to access electronic articles from different vendors. Attendees will also learn about the different options for communicating with library staff: request articles not owned by the library, request literature searches, and make purchase recommendations.
Learn to optimize your searching skills. In this
workshop you will learn how to use Medical Subject Headings
(MeSH) more efficiently to create powerful search queries significantly
improving access to relevant biomedical information. This workshop
provides hands-on experience and includes revising strategies
to improve results, effective use of textword searching, how
to limit retrieval for optimal results, links to full-text articles,
and printing or emailing results.
This class will cover finding evidence-based medicine
in the literature. Databases such as EBM Reviews — Best
Evidence and Cochrane Reviews — will be discussed, including
the links from MEDLINE to EBM Reviews. Search tips will be discussed
to find the latest information in MEDLINE. Internet resources
supporting evidence based medicine will also be discussed.
RefWorks, EndNote and Reference Manager are file managers that allow you to import citations from MEDLINE, Cinahl or other e-resources to create a personal database. EndNote is available on five workstations in the LRC, RefWorks is available for use by academic faculty and students, and Reference Manager is not available in the library. However, the library offers instruction and support in the use of all of these tools. These file managers allow you to create footnotes and bibliographies in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect specific to publishers' guidelines. Library classes will be offered on each file manager: learn how to download citations from various databases, upload into the file manager, and use the citations to create a bibliography in your Microsoft Word or WordPerfect document.Individual consults are also available by appointment for support of these products.

Learn about biomedical applications that are available for the PDA. Session will focus on identifying key sources for biomedical PDA applications, describe in general the type of applications available, describe generally the process of downloading/installing PDA applications, describe in detail the two products in the library which have PDA components: Micromedex and MD Consult. Demonstrations of various products and processes will be done both via the internet and via the PDA using Margi presentation software
