How do I find out what journals or articles are available electronically?

The alphabetical and subject e-journal lists detail what journals are available electronically through the Health Sciences Library. To find a specific e-journal title, view the E-Journal List. From there you can search by title, browse by title, or browse by subject. Information on the alphabetical and subject e-journal lists includes: e-journal title, a link to the e-journal provider (sometimes more than one source is available), and years of coverage. You can view the e-journal list from any location.

Links to e-journals can also be found in Pegasus, the library's online catalog. Links are available in Pegasus only for e-journals that the library also has in print. Search Pegasus by journal title. If we have access, a link to the e-journal will appear.

How do I tell what years are available electronically?

On the alphabetical and subject e-journal lists, clicking on a title will display coverage dates.

Why aren't more years covered electronically?

Publishers determine what years are available electronically. The average e-journal is covered from 1996 onwards. There are cases where e-journal providers will add older volumes. Some providers only provide access to issues after a certain amount of time has passed.

What e-journal providers does the library use?

On the alphabetical and subject e-journal lists, clicking on a title will display an e-journal provider name. Many titles are available from more than one e-journal provider. It is helpful to know what title or e-journal provider you are using when you encounter a problem using the journal. Currently, the library provides access to over 1,400 titles from a variety of providers.

Why doesn't the library subscribe to some e-journals that I see advertised?

Offering e-journal access involves complex issues of cost, license negotiation, authorization, and notification. A journal might not be offered for the following reasons:

- Publishers simply haven't notified us that an e-journal is available.
- The library decided not to purchase access due to excessive license restrictions.
- The subscription may be too expensive for us to consider at this time.
All new e-journal requests need to meet the library's collection development policy guidelines. Please contact Heather Cannon at hcannon@lumc.edu or at 708.216.5302 to request a journal title to be added or if you have any questions regarding a journal title or service being dropped.

Institutional Access
What sometimes appears to be a journal offering free electronic access is not always the case for institutional subscribers. Publishers handle personal and institutional access differently.  Oftentimes, the library needs to pay additional money for online access and sign a license agreement.

How do I find out what e-journals the other campus owns?

The other Loyola libraries have a searchable e-journal listing on their website . Unfortunately, the Health Sciences Library is not able to assist you with any problems you encounter in using e-journals maintained by the other campuses.

Why do some subjects have more e-journals than others?

The Health Sciences Library receives e-journals from a variety of sources. E-journals are offered in a number of ways: part of a package, the other campus has a subscription, or we receive electronic access with our print subscription. Because of database packages, the Health Sciences Library has more journals in some areas. We prefer to view our e-journals by quality and not just quantity. The Health Sciences Library reviews gaps in our e-journal collection on an annual basis. At that time, we review pricing, print usage and licensing issues to see if we can add electronic access. For more information, contact Heather Cannon at 708.216.5302 or at hcannon@lumc.edu.

Access

How do I access e-journals from the Medical Center Campus?

E-journals can be accessed from a variety of sources. If you know the journal you would like to see, you can go directly to the title from the alphabetical or subject e-journal lists. Links can also be found in Pegasus , the online catalog, for e-journals that the library also receives in print.

If you are unsure of a journal article, you can search the different article databases such as OVID , EBSCO Host , or MD Consult and find an appropriate full-text journal article. A large number of full-text articles can be found in those databases. Contact Jeanne Sadlik at 708.216.9192 or jsadlik@lumc.edu for any questions regarding database use.

Links from OVID's OpenLinks or PubMed's LinkOut to other full-text journal titles can also be used from the Medical Center Campus. Click here for more information .

How do I access e-journals from an off-campus location?

The library offers remote access to our electronic resources using ARCHER, a proxy server. For information on using ARCHER for remote access, please read the ARCHER Help Page.

To register for remote access using ARCHER, fill out the Proxy Server Remote ID Request Form.

Not all e-journals will be available through ARCHER due to technical or license restrictions. Please consult the alphabetical or subject e-journal lists for specific information on an e-journal's remote availability.

For user authentication or problems logging in, contact Donald Nagolski at 708.216.5308 or at dnagols@lumc.edu.

For technical problems, contact Heather Cannon at 708.216.5302 or at hcannon@lumc.edu.

Why can't I access an e-journal from another Loyola campus or from Hines?

Due to contractual agreements, licenses, and copyright restrictions, access to many electronic resources must be limited to Loyola University Health System, Stritch School of Medicine, and those enrolled in Loyola's health-related graduate programs. ARCHER allows access to restricted electronic library resources from Hines or another Loyola campus if you meet the criteria of an authorized user.

Why can't I connect to an e-journal?

There are several possibilities for this problem.

Loyola might not have institutional access to that journal. Please consult the E-Journal List to see if the journal is listed. If it is not listed, it is not a title we currently provide electronic access to then see here for more information .

If you are trying to access the e-journal from an off-campus location, you will need to login using ARCHER, the library's proxy server. The alphabetical and subject e-journal lists will let you know if remote access is available. Click here for more information on using ARCHER.

The provider for the e-journal might be experiencing technical problems. If the journal appears on our alphabetical or subject e-journal lists and you still cannot connect please contact Heather Cannon at 708.216.5302 or email at hcannon@lumc.edu and we will look into the problem. You can also check our alerts page to see if we are currently working on the problem.

During the first 4 months of a new calendar year, publishers often suspend access without notifying us. Call Heather Cannon at 708.216.5302 or email hcannon@lumc.edu so we can contact the publisher. We try to make every effort to catch these unexpected suspensions of service before they happen.

What is the access policy for e-journals?

Due to contractual agreements, licenses, and copyright restrictions, access to many electronic resources must be limited to Loyola University Health System, Stritch School of Medicine, and those enrolled in Loyola's health-related graduate programs. ARCHER allows access to restricted electronic library resources from Hines or another Loyola campus if you meet the criteria of an authorized user. If an e-journal is available from both campuses, users should link to the journal from their appropriate home library. In that case, all authorized users of Loyola University are included. See our Access Policy for more information.

What usage restrictions are in place for e-journals?

Our Access Policy spells out the general guidelines that all e-journal users should adhere to.

What is the difference between HTML and PDF?

PDF (Portable Document Format) displays images of the print format with the original page design, pagination, and typeface as the print journal. To view these page images, your computer must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed. The software can be downloaded here for no cost. HTML format is faster to load and does not require any additional software, however it is not an exact duplicate of the print journal. Images, pagination and text will appear different from the print journal.

Why do some e-journals direct me to a search page and others link me directly to a table of contents?

E-Journals can be considered in two ways - those that are available directly from publishers or those found in an article database. E-Journals found in an article database such as MD Consult, and EBSCO Host will always require you to use the search interface. The table of contents for an entire issue or volume will not be found. Please contact Jeanne Sadlik at 708.216.9192 or at jsadlik@lumc.edu for any questions in searching the different databases.

The e-journals from publishers are linked directly to the journal's web page whenever possible. Even still, all publishers offer access to their e-journals differently so access will vary from journal to journal.

How can I link to e-journals through PubMed or OVID?

OVID's OpenLinks . You can now link to full-text journals from sources other than OVID while doing a MEDLINE search using OpenLinks (in addition to OVID full-text links). If a title is available in a full-text format from an e-journal provider other than OVID, a link will appear next to the citation that says Full-Text. Following that link, will take you the full-text article.

PubMed's LinkOut . Similar to OpenLinks, LinkOut allows you to link full-text articles from a PubMed search. In order to use this feature, you must use the following URL for PubMed: http://archer.luhs.org:80/login?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/
query.fcgi?holdings=luclib In order to determine what e-journals are available, you have to view search results in citation display. Once you have selected citation display, look for the button that says Online Full-Text.. If that button is available, you can view the full-text article by clicking on it. Publishers also place their logo on the citation display, but only citations that say Online Full-Text are available free to library users. If you encounter any problems in using LinkOut or OpenLinks, please contact Jeanne Sadlik at 708.216.9192 or jsadlik@lumc.edu .

Why are some e-journals not listed in Pegasus, the online catalog?

Pegasus only has e-journals listed if we have the print volumes at the library. If a journal has never been received at the library in print format, it will not appear in Pegasus . For this reason, it is a good idea to double-check the E-Journal List.

Source-Specific Questions

When I go to an article in MDConsult via a link in Pubmed, MDConsult asks me for a password. How can I access the article?

MDConsult requires users to provide their MDConsult user name and password in order to link to full text articles through Pubmed. If you do not already have a MDConsult user name and password, you must create one. Go to MDConsult's Welcome page by selecting MDConsult from the Loyola Health Sciences webpages. Near the bottom of the MDConsult Welcom page, there is a link lableled "establish an account.". By clicking on that link and completing the form provided, you will become a registered user. If you prefer to NOT have a Personal Account with MDConsult, you can also take note of the citation you wish to access and then enter MDConsult through the library's homepage, which will give you access to the Generic Account.

Can I download and print articles?

Yes. We ask that you abide by the Access Policy when printing and downloading articles.

Why am I having problems printing a PDF article?

If you have problems loading a PDF file, make sure you are using the most recent version of Acrobat .  Use the print function within the Adobe Acrobat software rather than the print key of your Internet browser. We also advise that you wait for the entire document to load before printing a PDF file. If it is a large document, it will take awhile to spool to your printer. If your printer's memory is too small, try printing one page at a time.  You can also save the file to disk before printing. Also, Acrobat does not work with the Internet browser, Opera.

Is the image quality comparable to the print version?

Oftentimes, the quality of images is not equal to that of the print journal. There are times when images are missing from the e-version due to publisher agreements. Printing from the article databases can also pose a problem when an article is not available in PDF format. In OVID, select print preview and make sure you choose full-size graphics.

Return to Top of Page

How do I print from OVID?

Go to citation manager on the side of the OVID screen. Select print preview. Choose full-size graphics. OVID will format the article to print. Use your browser print icon to print.

How do I enlarge an image and print or download it from OVID?

To enlarge an image, click on the image. To download the image, click on the image with the right mouse button.  Choose "save image as."
