Searching Medline and Biological Abstracts

Medline is the primary source for information from international literature on clinical medicine and biomedicine, including the following topics as they relate to biomedicine and health care:

  • Biology
  • Environmental science
  • Marine biology
  • Plant and animal science
  • Biophysics
  • Chemistry

Biological Abstracts is the world's most comprehensive reference database for life science research. The primary focus of BA is pre-clinical research information in biology & biomedicine including:

  • Traditional areas of biology, such as botany, zoology and microbiology
  • Biomedicine, agriculture, pharmacology and ecology
  • Interdisciplinary fields such as medicine, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, and biotechnology are also included

Searching both databases will give more comprehensive results. Medline and Biological Abstracts (BA) may index some of the same journals, but if you are looking for basic science-oriented biomedical information you will find different articles in BA that are not necessarily included in Medline.
