Interlibrary loan

Q: What is Interlibrary Loan?

A: Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that obtains research materials from other libraries that are not available at the Health Sciences Library.
Q: Who can use this service?
A: Anyone with a current LUMC ID is eligible to use this service.
Q: What does it cost?
A: Charges for Interlibrary Loan are assumed by the Health Sciences Library and not passed on to the requester.
Q: How long does it take?
A: It depends…
· Articles from other Loyola libraries or from reciprocal libraries usually arrive in 1-2 days.
· Articles from other libraries usually arrive within 7-10 business days.
· Books may take up to two weeks to arrive.

It is essential that you plan ahead to order material.
Q: What can I get through ILL?
A: Journal articles, books, and dissertations (only if a library owns more than one copy). Generally, audiovisual material and software is not loaned. The Interlibrary Loan staff will TRY to fill all requests but that is not always possible.
Q: What should I do before requesting an ILL?
A: FIRST, you must search Pegasus to determine if the Health Sciences Library owns the material. SECOND, check the Electronic Journals list for the titles we currently have in electronic format.
Q: May I borrow books that are checked out or on Reserve?
A: No. Materials that are checked out or on Reserve CANNOT be requested through Interlibrary Loan. You can fill out an online form to request a book that is checked out. If the Health Sciences Library owns an item but the status is “lost,” “missing,” or “at bindery” then a request can be submitted.
Q: How long may I keep a book obtained through ILL? Can it be renewed?
A: The lending library determines the loan period and renewal policy of the materials loaned. As a rule of thumb, it is generally two to three weeks. Borrowers should make every effort to use the materials within the original loan period.
Q: How do I submit an ILL request?
A: An online form is available from the Health Sciences Library’s homepage. Only one request per form is allowed.
Q: How will I be notified?
A: The Interlibrary Loan staff will call you when your material has arrived. If an article is received in electronic format, we can email it to your LUMC email address.
Q: Where do I pick up my materials?
A: At the circulation desk in the Health Sciences Library.
