Gift Policy
Gifts are
a welcome means of expanding and enhancing
library collections. However, primary consideration for gift
acceptance is the value of the donation to the Library collections.
The decision to accept a gift is made by the Head of Technical
Services, the Serials/Electronic Collections Librarian and/or
the Associate Dean, Health Sciences Library/Telemedicine in
accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policy.
Loyola University Health System and the Health Sciences Library
greatly appreciate the interest and support of all its donors—past,
present, and potential.
The following
policies apply to the conditions under which gifts are accepted
by the Library:
1. The
Library will gratefully accept funds for memorials and other
gift purchases.
2. Faculty and alumni authors are encouraged to contribute
autographed copies of their books which are in the scope of
the collection.
3. Potential donors should be requested to provide, in advance,
a list of materials being offered so that their value to the
collection may be assessed. In cases where the gift involves
five or less titles, titles may be checked over the telephone.
4. Gift offers are routed to, and accepted by, the Head of
Technical Services or the Serials/Electronic Collections Librarian.
A letter of acknowledgment and appreciation will be sent to
the donor upon receipt of the gift. If necessary, the University
Fund Development Office will also be notified.
5. Due to severe space and staff limitations, the Library
cannot accept more general donations of books or serials.
6. Acceptance of gifts are without condition as to their eventual
disposition.
7. Gifts must be delivered to the Library as library staff
cannot pick up gifts.
8. In accordance with IRS regulations (further clarified by
the Association of College and Research Libraries), the Library
will not provide donors with appraisals of gift materials.
Such appraisal is the responsibility of the donor. If requested,
the Head of Technical Services will offer the following assistance:
a.
Provide information as to which publishers’ or book
dealers’ catalogs quote current prices.
b. Suggest
professional appraisers .
