What
is ARCHER?
ARCHER is the name of our proxy server, which allows for a new,
streamlined way to remotely access the library's electronic
journals, books, and databases. By using the proxy server authorized
users will need only one login and password to access electronic
resources.
Who
is eligible?
Due to contractual agreements, licenses, and copyright restrictions,
access is limited to the following users: Loyola University
Health System, Stritch School of Medicine, faculty with joint
appointments and students enrolled in university health-related
graduate programs. A current LUMC ID is required. Users from
Loyola's other campuses must contact Donald Nagolski (dnagols@lumc.edu)
or Mary Klatt (mklatt@lumc.edu)
to authorize their status. If you qualify under these guidelines,
you can sign up by filling out this form.
How
do I sign up?
Register by filling out this form.
You will get an email notification confirming your login and
password by the end of the next business day. This will signify
that you can start using ARCHER.
What
do I do?
After registering, you will get an email notification confirming
your login and password. Then you will be able to use the proxy
server. To access the electronic resources:
Point your
web browser to the library's home page http://library.luhs.org.
Select
the electronic resource you want to view.
Enter
your login name and password. (Use
all lower case letters for your name. This is the only
place
where you will be asked to enter a login and password.)
Close
your Internet browser to log out of the proxy server.
When
is ARCHER available?
All the time.
What
do I need to get started?
A computer running Windows95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP or Mac OS. Internet
access and a web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Netscape,
or an ISP-provided browser such as that used with AOL). You
will also need to make sure "cookies" are enabled on your web
browser. For instructions specific to Internet Explorer and
Netscape, please choose from the list below.
- Internet
Explorer 6.x: Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy -> Advanced
-> check "Always allow session cookies"
- Internet
Explorer 5.x: Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom
Level -> check "Allow per-session cookies (not stored)"
- Netscape

It's
not logging me in, what's going on?
Make sure cookies are enabled on your Internet browser. See
above for instructions. Also, be sure to type in your login
name as one word, without punctuation and without capital letters.
Hyphens, apostrophes and all other punctuation is removed when
you register for remote access. For example, Joan Smith-Kline
would have a username of smithkline. Mark O'Malley would have
a username of omalley. After checking these possibilities,
you
may not be able to access ARCHER when logging in from another
institution. If you are at sites such as Children's Hospital
or West Suburban Hospital be aware that they may have a firewall
which prevents access through ARCHER.
Can
I change my password?
Unfortunately, no you cannot change your password. In Internet
Explorer you can store your password using their AutoComplete
feature. To use this feature, check Internet Explorer's help
pages. Netscape 6.2 has a similar feature, called Password Manager.
This is not recommended if you are using a public or shared
workstation.
My
MD Consult Personal Edition login and password is not working.
If you use the personal edition of MD Consult and have been
signing in with a login and password originally obtained from
the library, this will no longer work. If you still want a personal
edition of MD Consult you will need to create this account from
a computer at LUMC. Then you will be able to use this account
from off-campus.
Why
aren't all of the e-journals available from off-campus?
Some resources cannot be accessed from off-campus because the
vendor/publisher will not permit access off-campus or through
a proxy server, such as ARCHER. Others are unavailable because
the technology they use to validate users is not compatible
with the software we use for validating off-campus users.
I
am from the Lakeside Campus--Can I have access?
Due to contractual agreements, licenses, and copyright restrictions,
access is limited to the following users: Loyola University
Health System, Stritch School of Medicine, faculty with joint
appointments and students enrolled in university health-related
graduate programs. A current LUMC ID is required. Users from
Loyola's other campuses must contact Donald Nagolski (dnagols@lumc.edu)
or Mary Klatt (mklatt@lumc.edu)
to authorize their status.
Who
do I contact for more information?

authentication or problems logging in contact
Donald Nagolski at 708.216.5308 or dnagols@lumc.edu.
